Business Relationship Gone Bad – How to Fix It

Problem

Did you ever have to deal with a business relationship that had gone bad? Or are you the type of person that simply runs away when things get bad hoping you never get to see that person again? Indeed, this strategy isn’t so bad in today’s world – there are so many people out there, you could literally get yourself lost in the crowd and forget about all your work relationships gone bad. However, this could lead to a lot of in-fulfillment in your professional life and get you to build habits where you constantly screw up your professional links. Indeed... why would you make business relationships go right when you know you will run away as soon as a problem arises? If you’re mature and serious about ethics, fixing your shaky work relationship can certainly put you ahead of the competition. While everyone is busy playing the dodging game when it comes to problems, if you can dive right into the issues and fix them with the people you deal with, you can be years ahead in terms of opportunities.

Opportunities

Because opportunities aren't just about scrolling through the job listings online and looking in the papers for another company to hop on board with, it's about seeing potential in even the people you have trouble dealing with. Whenever you see another person with a different set of ideas than yours, even if they seem absurd, tell yourself that you're dealing with a human being. Instead of running away, dropping the project, cancelling the referral or leaving your job, think about the opportunity that you have to transform your vision of business through that individual. In the process, you could very well realize that your problems can be solved and that simply a different form of business relationship can arise between you two. Maybe what you considered as your main deal, can become your second deal, or what you considered as your second deal, can become a simple lead or contact to work on in the future. People change, and yes, you can encounter the same people that you ran away from in the places you least expect it, so the best way to act when it comes to work relationships gone bad is to try to fix them.

The Process

When you attempt to fix a damaged relationship, try to have a discussion in a calm location where you’re less likely to get angry or too loud. Facts have to stay facts and try to find a way to turn the damaged relationship into a positive one. Even if the talks progress slowly or that you don’t see a positive way out yet, let go and take back the fight another time. Even the fact that you took the time to have a talk with someone with who your work relationship has been damaged can do wonders for the future. At least people on both sides can go back home thinking differently about the other person, maybe generating some more positive thoughts and ways to make the relationship better in the future. One thing is sure and it’s that in the case of work relationships gone bad, making some efforts is almost always rewarded.
